Garrylee McCormick : Artist's Statment

As night falls, the lines between physical and spiritual begin to fade.
As the time for dreaming comes, are the dreams fantasy or sublime vision?
The works in this show are representative of my interest in photography and in icons. The pieces are a mix of old and new work, and they reflect my efforts to blend the old and the new.
Some of the photos try to capture on film the misty image that appears when eyelids close and sleep is still moments away. That image is one in which physical beauty takes on heavenly character.
My inspirations are everyday events; I use them to show how an event from the Christian tradition might have looked had it happened today.
The icon plays a major role in my work. Although I use the modern media of photography, photo silk screen, and xerography, as well as egg tempera, my work is based in the tradition of the icon.
The works also reflect the influence of time I spent as a Trappist monk and my experiences in Russia, studying traditional icon painting in the Alexander Nevsky Lavra (Monastery) in St. Petersburg. The monastery is a place of spirituality, peace, and contemplation. Having lived and studied there, I look at the world from a different perspective.
